Pirate hat made of EVA foam – DIY carnival costume for kids

Pirate hat made of EVA foam on a styrofoam head – front view with gold cross embellishment

Ahoy, landlubbers! 🏴‍☠️ Carnival is just around the corner, and what would a real pirate costume be without the perfect hat? Instead of buying a cheap plastic tricorn, I sat down and made one myself – out of EVA foam.

The material

EVA foam is the perfect crafting material for such projects. It is easy to cut, shape with a hot glue gun, and paint beautifully. For the typical leather look, I painted the hat with dark brown acrylic paint after shaping it and added highlights with a dry brush.

The result

The finished tricorn has a golden embellishment with crossed sabers on the front and an elegant white feather on the side. All handmade, all with love:

Conclusion

With a few sheets of EVA foam, a hot glue gun, and some paint, you can conjure up a really impressive pirate hat in just a few hours. My daughter was thrilled – and that is what counts! 💛

Carnival can come! ☠️⚓
